Martha was the daughter of Henry and Ann Horsfield who were grocers of Colne. She was the youngest of 13 children and her home once stood on the site on which the Town Hall was later erected. Her father was a Wesleyan Methodist, but she (with some of her sisters) attended the Chruch of England. At 14 she became a Primitive Methodist after seeing their kindness towards her ill sister.

Martha was William's wisest advisor and she supported him in his service to religion, philanthropy and education.
